The European Union’s general data privacy regulation (GDPR) took effect in May 2018 and is intended to have a broad scope. Are U.S. health plans required to comply with GDPR? Is compliance with GDPR different from compliance with HIPAA and other U.S. data privacy requirements? This session will provide an overview of key considerations related to GDPR for U.S. health plans. It will include a discussion of the general requirements of GDPR, analysis of whether GDPR is applicable to sponsors and administrators of U.S. health plans, and a comparison of GDPR to HIPAA.
