There is much information to be gathered and many decisions to be made when a client passes away. Frequently surviving spouses, children and family members are not in a position to take charge and the tax professional has a role to play.

There are options for reporting income or taking deductions on the final tax return vs. tax returns of beneficiaries or estate tax returns. It is necessary to get an inventory of assets at fair market value even if no estate tax return will be filed.

Frequently it is necessary to educate a surviving spouse, trustee, and other beneficiaries with regard to financial and tax matters.
